Automating E-mail Management and the Planning of Public Meetings
The customer
Based in the US, the customer is a provider of software solutions to a public sector. The company’s main offering is a platform that helps local governments to automate e-mail management and organize public town meetings to discuss arising issues in economy, education, health, wellness, etc.
The need
Local governments receive hundreds of daily e-mails from citizens who want to speak at town meetings. Municipal clerks review the messages, sorting inquiries by topics and publishing relevant ones in a meeting agenda on the administration’s website. This manual processing may take a clerk up to 8 hours per week. The bigger the population, the more time-consuming becomes the task, so citizens may wait for weeks till their e-mails are reviewed.
Relying on Altoros, the customer wanted to build a platform that automates this process. The company planned to showcase the system to a few municipalities, so a minimum viable product (MVP) had to be delivered under tight deadlines.
The challenges
Under the project, the team at Altoros had to address the following issues:
- As city population may vary from thousands to millions, scalability was a top priority, as well as high availability and performance.
- Since the system had to process personal information (names, e-mail address, etc.), it was important to ensure data security.
- As people with disabilities would also utilize the platform, compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act had to be enabled.

The outcome
Partnering with Altoros, the customer helped local governments to automate e-mail management, saving 500+ hours monthly on manual processing of inquiries from citizens. This way, municipal clerks can efficiently plan monthly meetings, while citizens no longer wait for weeks till their request is reviewed. The system enables clerks to review and reply to e-mails, as well as include them into the agenda of appropriate public meetings featured at the administration website. Citizens can view the issues for discussion and submit comments.

Improving Equipment Monitoring and Maintenance
The customer
Operating globally, the company is a leading provider of process safety management technologies to the petrochemical, as well as oil and gas industries. Headquartered in the USA, the organization has offices in the Asia Pacific and MENA regions.
The need
One of the plants our customer was serving had a paper-based process of monitoring equipment. To report data to operators, field workers manually took equipment readings, which was time-consuming and inefficient.
Relying on expertise at Altoros, the company wanted to build a system that would allow field workers to instantly fill out equipment readings, while ensuring video and audio connection with operators. The system had to be delivered in tight deadlines, as the customer intended to pitch it to one of the world’s largest petrochemical companies.
The challenges
Under the project, the team at Altoros had to address the following issues:
- Video and audio connection between field workers and operators had to be enabled in the conditions of blocked Internet at the plant.
- The field workers must be able to scan QR codes placed on the equipment and collect such data as a serial number, model, etc.
The outcome
Partnering with Altoros, the customer built a system that facilitated equipment monitoring. In the conditions of blocked Internet due to security reasons, the solution is capable of providing video and audio communication between field workers and operators. Thanks to the development being completed in just two months, the customer was able to get funding from one of the world’s largest petrochemical companies.

Customizing an Artificial Intelligence Chatbot
The customer
The customer is a leading provider of communication and conferencing, identity and access, as well as customer engagement and support solutions. Founded in 2003, the organization is one of the world’s top 10 public SaaS companies. Headquartered in Boston, the customer has offices in North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.
The need
The customer had an artificial intelligence chatbot that provided user support 24/7. As the company served numerous enterprises from different industries, the chatbot had to be customized to business-specific needs.
Collaborating with Altoros, the customer sought assistance in tailoring the chatbot to particular workflows of each organization, as well as delivering some performance improvements.
The challenges
- Due to security reasons, enterprises must obtain full control over authorization with credentials (logins and passwords) not visible to anyone outside their organizations.
- Internet Explorer is limited to 3–5 WebSocket connections, while the chatbot needs 5+ such connections to establish communication with the browser.
- It was important to achieve code uniformity, thus facilitating the delivery and maintenance of customizations.

Sports Training Diary
The customer
Sports Training Diary is a Web application that helps to plan and track training sessions. Users can schedule workouts consisting of multiple activities or use workout routines suggested by the system. The application can synchronize with various sports computers to collect statistical data on blood pressure, heartbeat, burnt calories, etc. The information is used for daily progress reports that can be received via e-mail. The system also suggests optimal workout routines and offers other useful tools for effective training. Sports Training Diary also offers dedicated profiles for companies. Each company can have their own account and users.
The outcome
For this project the team designed and built a solution consisting of a system core and a number of configurable modules. This architecture allowed for creating a high performance and scalable system that could be easily adjusted to fit the requirements of different companies. The application has been customized for many companies, including Statoil, Gjensidige, and others. With the launch of this solution Jarle Holt/Segmentor received a new revenue channel. The application was released in English and Norwegian but other languages can be added, if necessary.

Ensuring Transparency and HIPAA Compliance for a Blood-Sampling Kit
The customer
Based in the USA, the customer is a healthcare startup serving medical institutions and clinical research organizations. In September 2019, the company raised a $6-million investment for its flagship product—a toolkit for self-collection of blood samples. Saving the need to visit a doctor and undergo a painful phlebotomy procedure, this toolkit allows for drawing blood samples at home.
The need
The customer aimed at delivering an affordable service that would not require cold chain transportation. To ensure samples are fit for laboratory diagnostics, it was necessary to analyze temperature measurements taken by the toolkit during the trip.
Together with Altoros, the company wanted to enable data analysis/visualization, assign devices to patients, and send reminders to collect blood or take medicine. Besides, the customer sought strong expertise in cloud security, CI/CD, and rapid prototyping—looking for a partner with proven track record of building healthcare solutions on top of AWS.
The challenges
- As the system was dealing with personal data, it had to comply with the HIPAA Privacy and Security rules.
- On the way to MVP, the customer wanted to evaluate a set of technologies and features on the go, adapting functionality to pilot feedback gathered. As part of this, the company aimed to present its prototype at a large-scale pharmaceutical conference, building the system under tight deadlines.

The outcome
Partnering with Altoros and employing the capabilities of Amazon HIPAA services, the customer developed a prototype compliant with required healthcare security standards. The prototype can handle 500+ requests per second and would feature even more elastic scalability in production with a view to potential high loads. The idea behind the prototype will enable both healthcare institutions and patients to dramatically cut time on the blood collection process and therefore ensure more frequent testings, providing better treatment and saving more lives. This will also reduce the risk of exposing to infections such as coronavirus or flu in public spaces and clinics.
Thanks to multifaceted functionality, the prototype won a disrupting innovations nomination at the pharmaceutical conference. Relying on the findings achieved together with Altoros, the customer is planning to develop an MVP featuring integrations with the postal services to establish a transparent supply chain process.
